Two undertakers shrouding a dead woman

Shroud

The ready-made shroud is made of loose sleeves and a shirt-front which is open at the back.

A pillow and a quilt are parts of a shroud. To shroud a dead person takes ten to fifteen minutes.

Velcro is used to attach the clothes. The buttons have a pure aesthetical function.

An open coffin during the funeral act is unusual in Sweden. Whether the family wants to see the dead body or not, the body is always made to look nice. The shrouding is done with dignity and respect.

Sometimes the relatives want the deceased to be shrouded in their own clothes. Men are often shrouded in a suit, for women it´s common with an evening dress or a nightdress. Uniforms and leisure wear are also popular.
